NEWSLETTER 2024 Bio Banner HP Indigo Celebrating 35 years in business

In September 1988, in the humble setting of a double garage filled with second-hand printing equipment acquired at auction, the story of Platinum began. Over 35 years, this small startup has evolved into a thriving printing powerhouse, making its mark in an ever-evolving industry. David, driven by his entrepreneurial spirit, envisioned a business that could serve his existing customer base without competing with his current employer. He was working as a salesperson for a stationery company and before that, he had been a mechanic providing him with the technical acumen needed to learn the intricacies of the printing industry. Marina, with eight years of experience in accounting and finance, complemented David’s skills perfectly. Together, they formed a formidable team, with David handling sales and printing while Marina managed artwork, deliveries, and accounts. Initially, Platinum focused on litho printing and finishing, keeping things simple. But growth was rapid, necessitating three moves in four years. By 1992, they had a team of 10 and Platinum’s journey was well underway. Key milestones and turning points shaped their path. Partnering with John Clough, who specialised in continuous forms expanded their business reach in the ’90s. This move allowed David to shift his focus to sales, leaving production in the capable hands of their young team led by Mark Plummer. In the mid-’90s, they acquired the print division of Harrogate Stationery, followed by diversification into digital print, mailing, sign and display, and promotional products. However, their most significant acquisition occurred in 2016 when they merged with HPL forming PlatinumHPL. By 2020, they had 50 staff and a turnover nearing 5 million. Then, the unexpected happened.

In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, presenting a challenge like no other. The week of March 16th saw approximately 500 orders in production, dwindling to less than 50 by the week’s end. It was an incredibly difficult period, but Platinum’s commitment to its employees remained steadfast. Staying competitive in a constantly changing market required ongoing hard work, wise investments, and embracing new technologies. However, their primary focus was always on customer satisfaction and relationships. Reflecting on their journey, David and Marina shared valuable lessons. Due diligence is paramount, and always expect the unexpected, as evidenced by the COVID-19 outbreak. For those aspiring to follow a similar path, David and Marina offer this advice: “Pursue your passion, be prepared to work tirelessly, and make friends not enemies along the way.” As Platinum enters its next chapter, they remain committed to innovation and efficiency. They plan to bridge the gap between print and digital media, exploring growth opportunities in packaging, highly personalised digital print, and direct mail. Their vision is simple: to be an exceptional partner, a great company to be part of, and profitable all at once. Wyvill Garage, September 1988 The Platinum Team, 2023 Platinum Dry Ski Slope, 1992

As our partnership with the World Land Trust continues, we proudly maintain our status as a Carbon Balanced Printer, reaffirming our unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility. By offsetting carbon emissions and supporting habitat conservation, we actively contributed to a greener future. Notably, our carbon offset initiatives surpassed expectations in the third quarter of 2023, successfully offsetting nearly 10 tonnes of paper usage. Our investment in solar panels further solidified our commitment to renewable energy. Installed at our HQ in Harrogate, these solar panels not only align with our environmental goals but also contribute to a sustainable future, harnessing the power of the sun. In addition we added three more electric vehicles to our Green in 2023. Reflecting our ongoing commitment to sustainability and the reduction of our carbon footprint. The fleet now includes Sam’s new Tesla Model Y, Ben’s all-electric CUPRA Born and Anthony’s Kia EV6, embodying our dedication to a cleaner mode of transportation. A Greener Future Strategic Investment in Moll Folder Gluer: Enhancing our Packaging Capabilities for a Sustainable Future In 2023, a significant investment was made in a Moll folder gluer as part of our ongoing efforts to better serve our clients. While we had been increasingly involved in packaging work, the manual application of tape and glue or outsourcing had been our only alternatives. With the investment in the Moll we were able to decrease turnaround times and increase the accuracy in our packaging products. Recognising the growing demand from established customers for additional packaging and a shift in preference among packaging buyers towards paper-based alternatives over plastic, we decided that the timing was opportune for this investment. We view packaging as a vital service and an important part of our future as a sustainable commercial printer.

HP INDIGO Continuing our commitment to constant improvement, we made a significant investment in an HP Indigo press. Being renowned for its high standards within commercial printing, it was the obvious choice. As a result, our clients now seldom specify whether digital or litho printing is preferred, as this decision is typically dictated by cost. The HP Indigo press excels in delivering print quality comparable to litho, making it the preferred choice for design agencies and businesses alike. Its capacity to print white ink and utilise the seven-colour palette to achieve close approximations of most Pantone colours, rather than relying on spot colours, makes it a cost-effective and versatile choice. Quick setup times further minimise costs, solidifying its position as a valuable asset. Anthony remarked, “The press presents an array of unique features, incorporating white ink and fluorescent inks. When combined with the standard advantages of digital printing, like accommodating short runs and personalisation, the choice of the HP Indigo press for us was clearly a natural one. However, there was a minor issue with the Indigo - its size! We had to dismantle the ceiling to position the printer correctly.” Due to it’s versatility the Indigo has significantly expanded our packaging offerings, enabling us to produce one-off prototypes and small runs. Allowing businesses to visualise their packaging and make Well Done Katherine! Celebrating Excellence In the spirit of recognising outstanding young professionals in our industry, it was with immense pride that we recently witnessed our employee, Katherine, being honoured with the prestigious Victor Watson Trophy at Bowcliffe Estate in Bramham. This esteemed award celebrates the exceptional accomplishments of young individuals in Yorkshire’s print, digital, and creative industries, in partnership with the esteemed British Print Industry Federation (BPIF). Katherine is a great asset to Platinum, serving as a fantastic estimator. She is committed to her job, ensuring the seamless execution of projects from the initial inquiry stage through to final delivery. On a daily basis, she contributes to the smooth functioning of our operations.

informed decisions before investing in large-scale production. In terms of volume and speed, the Indigo surpasses the capabilities of smaller printers like the Ricoh we previously used. While it may not match the speed of litho, it effectively bridges the gap between the two, enabling us to handle high-volume printing efficiently. In line with our environmental policies, this newer machine boasts enhanced energy efficiency, rapid start-up times, and minimal power consumption in standby mode. Waste reduction is achieved through the ability to execute shorter print runs and on-demand printing, contributing to a more sustainable printing process. Can you tell me about your journey as a designer and why you chose Platinum? “I’ve always been keen on progressing my career forward, and I had gone as far as I could in my last role. A job became available at Platinum, and I had worked with Platinum in the past so it seemed like a good fit.” What aspects of design are you most passionate about? “In my spare time, I design wedding stationery, I really enjoy this as there is a lot of creative freedom with design & stock used. It’s rewarding being involved in someone’s big day too!“ What challenges have you faced in your role, and how have you overcome them to deliver successful design solutions? “I had never been involved in ‘print’ before. I used to send my artwork off to a printer and hoped for the best! Spending time with different departments, learning how the machines work, and understanding the ‘pre-press’ side of things were crucial steps in developing successful designs. For example the 2023 advent calendar! With the knowledge of how to set artwork up using white ink enabled me to create a design using mirror board instead of trying to use foiling.“ Can you share a bit about your creative process? How do you approach a new project from concept to completion? “Being able to chat with a client in detail is always useful as it enables me to understand their expectations. I then take a look at what a client has had designed before, become familiar with their brand guidelines and then seek inspiration. I always like to offer more than one design where possible as people don’t always know what they want until they see it!“ What are some of your favourite hobbies or activities outside of work? “When not immersed in the world of design, I enjoy watching Leeds United play at the pub, spending quality time with my daughter, and occasionally engaging in Thai boxing sessions.” How do you typically spend your weekends or free time? “With family and friends! It’s rare I can just kick back with my feet up with a 3 year old in toe.” Is there a particular place you love to travel to or a dream destination on your bucket list? “Italy holds a special place in my heart, with dreams of exploring the entire country. Exploring, eating and drinking!” Can you share a memorable personal achievement or milestone that you are proud of? “It’s got to be my sassy little mini me, my daughter Demi!” Spotlight An inspiring journey of one of our talented designers here at Platinum.
