Herbal leys can be highly beneficial to soil health, increasing biological activity and organic matter content. Improving soil structure through the action of deep rooting plants which can reduce surface runoff. Herbal leys can extend the grazing season, and improve feed quality for livestock, thereby reducing purchased concentrates. The high legume content of the ley reduces the need for expensive artificial nitrogen, since they fix their own N, feeding the other grasses and herbs in the mixture. This mixture has been designed to meet SFI Herbal Ley standard and was created for Yorkshire Water tenant farmers by Neil Pickard.
