professional. We’ve doubled the number of models we use and
the venue keeps getting bigger – we sold out the City Museum
this year, which has a capacity for 450 people.”
Next year promises to be bigger and better than ever. “It’s
really important to keep the momentum going. We don’t want
people to think it’s just something that happens once a year, so
we’re planning to do something small every month to keep it
fresh in people’s minds.”
LFS works really hard to bridge the gap between
education and the fashion industry and get new talent out there
– and not just for the beneft of up-and-coming designers, but
aspiring models and photographers, too.
Tere are plenty of success stories. One is Kelly Ewing.
“She is doing really well,” says Rhonda. “She has shown her
designs as part of LFS since 2006 and one of her dresses was
worn by Amelia Lily in the
X-Factor
semi-fnal.”
Another is designer Bo Carter, who quit her job as an
accountant after designing a collection for LFS. “She hadn’t
even used a sewing machine before then, but it was something
she really wanted to do and we gave her that opportunity,”
says Rhonda. “Now she has her own shop in Bird’s Yard.” And
it’s not just designers who are beneftting from LFS. One of
the models, Victoria Bailey, hadn’t modelled before getting
involved in LFS. She went on to win Miss Leeds.
Leeds is certainly a great city for fashion. “Te scene here
is really dynamic,” says Rhonda. “More people are stepping out
with their unique styles, withmore confdence than before. We’re
being braver about what we wear. And it’s great not to have to
move to Manchester or London to have a career in fashion. We
didn’t want to do that and Leeds Fashion Show is helping to
make Leeds a dynamic place to be involved in fashion.”
