Of all the things to look forward to in Britain in 2012, the Olympics
is surely the biggest.While London is the focal point of the 2012 Olympics,
cultural activities will also be flling up everyone’s diaries as Leeds becomes
THE place to visit outside the capital during the games.
Tere is plenty to excite sports fans,with two opportunities to line the
streets and cheer on the torch relay, seven Olympic and Paralympic teams
using Leeds as their base and a number of Britain’s hopeful sportsmen and
women coming from the city.
LEEDS INSPIRED
To kick start the celebrations, the Leeds Inspired cultural programme
has been set up to capture and combine brand new creative endeavours
with existing well loved events.Te calendar (which will become an annual
programme) will be jam-packed with sport, art and heritage events helping
you to both explore the city and fll your own diary. Details of all the
celebratory activities can be found at

One of the key cultural events is Leeds Canvas (18th to 20th May),
a city wide collaboration between key arts organisations.Since Athens 2004,
the arrival of the Olympic Games in each country has been accompanied
by the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012 will see a series of artistic and
cultural projects take place across the UK, including Leeds Canvas.
Avant-garde American flmmakers the Quay Brothers have been
enlisted as artistic directors,and will be celebrating the weird and wonderful,
