Celebrations are sure to take place throughout
2013 and, although acts have not yet been confrmed
for the Arena, we can expect some major artists and
cultural performances to cash in on the excitement.
So too, are existing schemes – it seems the Arena
and Trinity Leeds are playing a catalytic part in
wider regeneration of the city centre.
Town Centre Securities plc (TCS), who
developed, own and manage the Merrion Centre,
are redeveloping 80,000 sq ft of retail space into a
lively leisure destination with bars, cafes, restaurants
and a gym. Te development will transform the
existing facilities and work will be completed to
coincide with the opening of the Leeds Arena
opposite the centre.
Despite its focus on retail and leisure, Leeds is
not letting slip its sporting credentials in 2013.As well
as being home, uniquely, to a host of sporting codes,
including football, rugby and cricket, international
sport is coming to Leeds in 2013. Te city will
host the Rugby League World Cup at Headingley
Carnegie Stadium. Te venue, just outside the city
centre, will host a group match and a quarter-fnal
in the 14-nation tournament, which takes place in
the autumn. Leeds will also be a base for the two
competing nations, with the John Charles Centre
for Sport being used as a training base. Sporting fans
will also relish the international cricket test matches
taking place in 2013 and the 150th anniversary of
Yorkshire County Cricket Club.
All of this is in addition to the annual
programme of festivals and activities, including the
Leeds Festival and Live at Leeds.
Leeds Train Station and Leeds Bradford
Airport are also expecting major transformations
in 2013, so the celebratory calendar for the
next year looks truly packed and visitors will be
welcomed with delight!
