His belief in investing in people also extends to providing
apprenticeships and creating driving scholarships for young
people. Although now one of the wealthiest men in the UK
with an estimated fortune of £400 million, it certainly wasn’t
always like that for the 47-year old.
Born and bred in Batley, a town seven miles south-west
of Leeds, his father was a wagon driver and his mother packed
biscuits at Fox’s. He scraped into Batley Grammar School
before studying engineering in nearby Huddersfeld, then
mechanical engineering at Bradford for four years. Tomlinson’s
West Yorkshire links remain strong and his state-of-the-
art 75,000 sq ft HQ is situated on a non-descript industrial
estate in Garforth, a town on the eastern outskirts of Leeds.
It seems an unprepossessing spot in which to base an empire.
For Tomlinson though, the decision to locate his car factory
and ofces in this particular part of West Yorkshire was
nothing short of “easy”. “Tis unit was available, we needed
manufacturing space and this was perfect,” he says. “In terms
of transport the links are brilliant. We’re next to the motorway
so it’s easy to get things where they need to be. You can be in
Leeds within 10 to 15 minutes. You can jump on the train and
you’re in London in two hours. Or I can leave from here in a
helicopter and be in Battersea in 55 minutes. “Plus I’ve always
