LEEDS CITY REGION
AT AGLANCE
MILLION
POPULATION
HOW EASY IS IT FOR NEW COMPANIES TO SET
UP HERE AND TURN THEIR BUSINESS IDEA INTO
A REALITY?
If you consider that we’ve got lots of relatively new
businesses, lots of relatively new areas of activity and
that the great majority of businesses – there’s more
than 100,000 businesses in the city region – are in
the SME [small and medium enterprises] sector,
then the facts show this is a place where businesses
can set up and grow. It’s a region where people
are still willing to invest. You’ve got major capital
investment going on, both from the private sector
and the public sector. You’ve got the universities
hungry for partners to work with. All the building
blocks for a real area of dynamism and innovation
are there.
ARE WE SET UP TO TRADE WITH THE WORLD?
COULD LEEDS CITY REGION BE THE SITE OF A
GLOBAL HQ?
I believe it can be.We do not operate internationally
as well as we should or could. If you look at the
fgures, only 8% of businesses in the city region
export, but if you look at the economic background
and the nature of businesses here, there’s no
reason at all why we could not have world-leading
businesses based here.Tere are certain sectors with
real growth potential – life sciences, medi-tech,
digital and creative media, green industry. We have
hubs of very good activity and we want them to
come together and spin of each other in the same
way that fnancial and businesses services did and
continue to do.
HOW DOES THE REGION SUPPLY THE SKILLS
ANDWORKFORCE A COMPANYMIGHT NEED?
Many of the universities in the City Region are
providing world leading research and we produce
over 30,000 graduates a year. So at that level we
have the talent pool and the research facilities to
go wherever the market needs us to go. We’ve also
got large and very competent further education
institutions and an excellent range of schools.
Tere’s a skills network in place to ensure employer
demand is clearly understood, so the skills needed
at every level of the job market can be met in a
timely manner.
WHAT PRACTICAL STEPS ARE BEING TAKEN TO
MAKE THE LEEDSCITY REGIONMORE BUSINESS
FRIENDLY IN TERMSOF TRANSPORT LINKS?
Tere is a huge amount of work going on among
the City Region councils to be creative in terms
of transport infrastructure. Tere’s a lot of work
going on to fnd investment – for example the West
Yorkshire local authorities themselves are working
together to see how they can pool resources to start
spending money according to the region’s economic
priorities, as opposed to how government feels it
